The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has released the latest list of 122 Nigerian universities approved to offer the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme as of August 2026.
The list covers federal, state and private universities across the country that have been accredited by the Council to admit students into Law.
The Council, however, warned prospective Law students, parents and guardians to confirm the accreditation status of any university before accepting admission.
According to the Council, students admitted into Law programmes at universities that are not accredited by the CLE will not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School.
The warning was contained in a public notice issued by the Council on Monday and dated August 14, 2026.
The Council said only universities accredited by it are authorised to admit students into the LL.B programme in Nigeria.
It further warned that any university admitting students into Law without the Council’s approval would be violating the regulations governing legal education in Nigeria and could face sanctions.
“The Council of Legal Education hereby informs the general public, prospective students, parents, guardians, and other stakeholders that only universities accredited by the Council of Legal Education are authorised to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in Nigeria.”
The Council added that students enrolled in Law programmes at unaccredited universities would not qualify for admission into the Nigerian Law School.
The notice was signed by Aderonke O. Osho, Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration.
Universities Under Admission Moratorium
While the Council listed 122 universities with approved Law programmes, three institutions are specifically identified as being under a moratorium on admissions for specified academic sessions.
This means the affected universities are not permitted to admit new students into their LL.B programmes during the periods stated by the Council.
They are:
Baze University, Abuja — three-year moratorium covering the 2023/2024 to 2025/2026 academic sessions.
Lead City University, Ibadan — five-year moratorium covering the 2023/2024 to 2027/2028 academic sessions.
Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil — two-year moratorium covering the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions.
The Council said the restrictions were approved by its governing body.

CLE Warns Prospective Law Students
The Council of Legal Education urged students seeking admission to study Law to verify the accreditation status of their preferred universities before accepting admission.
The warning is particularly important because admission into an unaccredited Law programme could affect a student’s ability to proceed to the Nigerian Law School after completing the LL.B programme.
The Council said the published list was provided “for the guidance of the public” and would be updated when necessary in line with its statutory responsibility of regulating legal education in Nigeria.
Prospective students are therefore advised to rely on the Council’s latest accreditation information when making decisions about where to study Law.
